My client has always been late paying me, and now has asked for more time. A friend told me that the company is in severe financial distress and that he himself just forced them to pay his 401k. also he felt the company was "pretty judgment proof." can i find whether a company has filed for bankruptcy, Chapter 11 or other protection?

Ofcourse, you can go and check with the bankruptcy court in the district where the business is based. Bankruptcies are public record, if they've filed, you can get a copy of it.
