Default Filing for the first time

I started a small business with a friend when I was 18 and it lasted for 3 years. I had a wells fargo business card that I did not know about. My business partner used my information and opened the account. He put about $2k into it and didn't let me know. I understand it was my fault that he had access to my personal info. The debt went into collections and now I believe it is up to $5k or more because of interest. I was dumb and naive. I am a full-time student and I want to get this taken care before I transfer and try to apply for school loans. Can any of you give me any advice? I believe the account was opened with my tax id not my ss#.

Thank you
