Default bankruptcy issue.

hi all, I signed a contract with contractor to landscape our front yard, pour a patio and build a retaining wall. i gave him some advance. After about a month of waiting, we found that the company will be filing for bankruptcy soon. I am considering going to courthouse and filing a small claims lawsuit against the company. Is it better to wait until after they file bankrupcy? Are there any other options besides filing a lawsuit?
