Default asking for more $?

Hi there,
A company fixed my car after an accident. I went through the other parties insurance, they gave me a check and negotiated the rest of the charges with co. directly. When picking my car the receptionist said I owed $500 out of my pocket. I paid and they gave me my keys. Now I started to get calls from them and they are saying I owe them 700 as there was an error and that they know that the insurance gave me a check for 1000. I told that I already paid what was on the receipt for my car. Is this legal? Do I still owe them the money they are saying in addition to what I have already paid? Please reply.
Thank you in advance.

It looks as they may have asked you to pay the wrong portion, but the the bill that they presented to you was for the full amount, but they only collected a portion, you owe the difference. They will not be able to collect from the insurance company, since you've already collected from the insurance company.
