Default medical bill payment?

hi friends, i was in the hospital couple of years ago while unemployed and had no insurance. When the bills started coming i applied for some type of assistance from a form the hospital had given me but was turned down. i paid off all the small bills and made payments on the Drs and Hospital bills. but hospital returned one of the payments asking for payment in full. later on, i sold my house, and moved to other state. Can they return a partial payment and then demand full payment? Would the suit be filed in Fl where the hospital is or where i am living now?
Please answer soon.
