Default wrote rent check for someone & now I am responsible for it?

I wrote a check to a Maryland property mgt company for a friend. He wanted to rent an apartment but needed a check to "hold" the apartment, otherwise they would rent to someone else. He did not have a checking account himself, but was going to give the first month's rent to them on payday a few days later. He told me that the check would NOT be cashed, it was only to secure the apartment. I was stupid, I know now, because they tried to cash it and it bounced. When I contacted the property mgmt. company, they told me that 1) My friend's name was not even on the lease, that someone else had filled out the application and said that my "friend" gave them the check for his rent and 2)that I am responsible for the money being paid and they are taking me to court. I have been scammed trying to do something nice. I know now it was a stupid thing to do. The "friend" is no longer a friend of mine, he has disconnected his phone. Is it true that I am responsible for the rent for someone I don't even know even though HIS name is on the lease? I am a single mom and can barely make my own bills. Help!

how can you write a check w/o cash in your account and never trust on someone blindly no matter he is your friend or what. That is a big mistake you had made. Anyway, talk to your friend what he says, if he is not supportive you need to talk to some local attorney.
good luck!
