Default PHI violated?

Hello friends,
I was admitted to the hospital after being beaten. I applied for victims assistance to pay the bill but they turned down my case. Later on, my hospital bill has been turned over to collections outside the hospital. Now, the collections agency is calling me, they mentioned my denial from victims assistance and seemed to know more about my circumstances and diagnosis than was necessary. The hospital may have given them more information than just selling off a bad debt. If it is true the hospital let my diagnosis and information on victims assistance denial to the collections agency does this violate my PHI? Should I get an attorney?
Thank you.

Diagnosis code is part of the required information needed to submit a claim for payment. That information, along with the denial from any insurance company or victim's assistance, is probably part of your payment ledger that was handed over to the collection agency. So, it might not be considered a violation.
