Default cc debt

Hi there,
My husband passed away and i can't afford to pay all the credit cards in full that were in his name. I ask them to settle on a lesser amount but they said i must first assume responsibilty. I don't want to assume something i cannot pay for. So, what is my right? Please reply back.
Thank you.

You are not personally responsible for his debts. However, his estate is responsible. So, if his estate has assets, they should be used to pay his debts.
