Default dog bite and no insurance...

i was bitten by a dog when i was staying at a neighbor's house, where the incident occured. i had to have surgery that day to repair his lip and will need more reconstuctive surgery later on. The homeowner informed me that she does not have homeowners insurance and I was wondering if there are any other options for compensation? plz give some suggestions.
thankz in advance.
