we are planning to build some small skate boarding ramps and boxes to ''grind'' on and i am concerned about our liability if one of our friends injures himself on the equipment. Does a waiver signed by the friends protect us?

My suggestion to you is to get an insurance as a waiver will not work here. Also, waivers rarely save anyone from a lawsuit and you can get sued.
