I have few miscellaneous checks made out, and the actual "estate" has no other assets. Someone recommended me to go to probate court to establish myself as an executor, setup up a bank account in the name of the estate, and then cash those checks. I want to know what can I expect to pay in court costs and in legal fees?

Probate fees are not expensive. Just check at the county courthouse if there is a special procedure for handling the smaller estates, and find out the actual cost of the filing fees. And after filing for probate you will receive a document called letters testamentary, and it is a certified copy of that document that you will present to the bank.
